Cloth Nappies.

At the Very beginning…..

You say to someone I use cloth nappies and there look at you like you’re mad…
I often get how do you cope with the soaking, folding and pins and I look at them and say I don’t - they’re not part of my cloth nappies. The looks I get make me laugh.

Going cloth is not as hard or complicated as it sounds, its very easy when you know when.

Im going to try and write it all down to help you choose if cloth nappies are for you.

Question - when can I start using cloth nappies

Answer - you can start using cloth from the day your baby is born. A lot of hospitals now allow you to take your cloth nappies in to hospital with you as long as you take them home and wash them. Some hospitals now  do cloth on the labour wards - they supply and wash them on hospital grounds..

Some mums like to wait till their baby is a  few weeks old before there start with cloth and some mums do not know about cloth till there little one is 6months +

Questions - How many nappies will I need??

Answer - I get asked this all the time… and the real answer is it all depends on how many times you want to wash per  week, how many babies you have in cloth, what nappies you want to go for , how long they take to dry.

Personally to wash ever 2 days I would say 15-20 nappies - that gives you spare nappies for when some are washing .

Question -  How do I wash??

Answer - Washing can not be any simpler its only a few extra minutes  2-3 times a week. (or when ever you decide to wash)

Store the dirty nappies in a dry bucket - no need to soak nappies just a dry bucket with a lid,
Take the nappies out and take a apart and place in to the washer.

Most nappies can be washed at 40oc but for tough stains and to sanitise your nappies a wash cycle at 60oc.

You should only about 1/4th  of your normal washing power - to much power will course  detergent build up and will course your nappies to leak and can cause nappy rash.

NEVER USE DETERGENT SOFTENER  - This will leave a oily layer on the nappies which will make them leak.

Every now and then add an extra rinse cycle this will help reduce detergent build up.

Question - Can I tumble dry my nappies?

Answer  - Yes you can but on a low heart. Most pocket nappies dry very quickly and if you wash over night and place on a airer  there will be dry for morning. Line drying is the best way to dry nappies this is quick and the sun will get rid of any stains.

Question - Can my baby wear normal size clothes.

Answer - Yes most nappies are very slim fitting and  most clothes will fit over cloth nappies
I have found cheaper brands like Tesco and Asda cloths fit a lot better. Slim fitted jeans (next) can be a little tight.

Question  - Should I buy nappies in bulk??

Answer -  I recommend buying a few nappies to try first (see our trail packs) .
Every cloth nappy  brands  fits every baby different so its best to try a few brands first. Unless you know and 100% sure on what brand you would like.

Once you know what nappy you  would like or the best fit for your baby then buy in bullk as this save you money  - see our multi packs page for more info on bulk packs.

Question  - which size should I go for…

Answer - This depends on the age and size of your baby..
A lot of mums like the one size nappy as this last from birth to toddler.
All Nappies have a size guide on the information pages.
